Fifth-grader Emily Denman and fourth-grader Colin McClary spelled their way to the top of their respective grades during a series of spelling bees at Broadalbin-Perth Intermediate School on Monday, Feb. 8. Both students will represent the district at the county spelling bee on March 15 at Gloversville Middle School for a chance to represent Fulton County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in June.
Denman won after spelling “artificial” correctly. Christina Lin was the fifth-grade runner-up. In the fourth grade bee, McClary correctly spelled “calorie” to beat Brandi Humphrey. Third-grade students also participated in a spelling bee, even though they won’t be eligible for the regional bee until they are in fourth grade. Wyatt Couperus won the “just for fun” bee and Logan Frye was the runner-up.
