Second-grade class joins fourth-graders for snowman-themed learning

Some of the students in Meg Marsden’s second-grade class took their first trip to Broadalbin-Perth Intermediate School – where they’ll be third-graders next year – on Tuesday, Dec. 6. The class was at the school to visit Dianne Magliocca’s fourth-grade classroom, where students worked in pairs to complete snowman-themed activities at seven learning stations.

With help from parent volunteers, each pair, which consisted of a fourth-grader and a second-grader, decorated a snowman-shaped sugar cookie; constructed a snowman out of marshmallows and toothpicks; brainstormed adjectives to describe snowmen; crafted a snowman ornament; completed a word search; listened while an adult read a story about snowmen aloud; and read aloud to each other while enjoying iced hot chocolate.

Mrs. Marsden and Mrs. Magliocca came up with the idea for the project as a vehicle to introduce younger learners to the intermediate school through cross-grade-level instruction, which also gave the fourth-graders an opportunity to mentor their younger peers.
