The college search process can be stressful and overwhelming. We have compiled useful web sites to better help you be successful when choosing a college. During Junior year, we will meet with students and parents to begin discussing how to find the right college for you. Senior year we will hold a senior seminar to review the college application process as well as important senior year information!
When should I start looking at colleges? It is never to early to begin looking at colleges. If you are on a vacation or in a new town, drive through the local college campus. Student that have seen more campuses can make a more informed decision. By spring of your junior year, the college search should be more focused. The following web sites are valuable resources in the college search process! www.collegeboard.com : This site allows you to create a college profile of your ideal college. In addition to tons of helpful college information, this site contains SAT and SAT II sample questions and registration. www.collegenet.com : This site offers a searchable database of colleges and scholarship opportunities. It allows students to apply over the net to different colleges and universities. Financial aid information is also available. www.embark.com: This site allows you to research colleges and financial aid options. www.campustours.com: Search colleges by name and state. www.collegeview.com : Multimedia virtual tours are the unique feature of this site. In addition to a database of over 3,800 two and four year colleges, this site offers a career center and financial aid information. www.nycolleges.org : This site includes information on New York 's private colleges including open houses, academic programs, campus profiles, and financial aid. www.anycollege.com: Search colleges by program, state, sports, or name. www.gocollege.com : This site contains practice SAT and ACT questions, as well as information on financial aid. Further, this site allows you to search colleges by location or by program. www.act.org : This site allows you to register for the ACT test online.
How many colleges should I apply to? We recommend at least 6 colleges including reach, target and safety schools. This list is compiled after much research and weighing pro's and con's. Please see us if you are having trouble deciding where to apply.
When do I need to apply by? All applications are due to the School Counseling office by Thanksgiving break. We need at least 2 weeks notice to ensure that applications are out on time and completed correctly.
