Educational programs at the The Learning Community at Broadalbin Perth designed
to foster a safe learning environment for all students. While maintaining
high expectations for its students, the administration and staff recognize
that a child's readiness to learn varies greatly from one another. To
that end, the continual assessment of developmental, social, and academic
progress is necessary to provide the most appropriate education for each
student.
All academic programs are designed to provide all primary aged learners
with a solid foundation in the four literacy skills that includes: reading,
writing, listening, and speaking. Students are exposed to a formal guided
reading program in first and second grades. This program allows teachers
to assess the instructional reading level of each child through the administration
of running records in grades 1 & 2. Students are taught various
"stuck on a word" strategies that foster independent reading skill,
in each young reader.
A formal Saxon Math curriculum is used to instill a solid foundation of math
skills in each student. Daily math instruction consists of a math meeting, fact
practice, formal math lesson, written practice, and periodic assessments.
Students also receive formal instruction in primary level Science and Social
Studies.
Primary aged students also receive formal instruction in Art, Music, and
Physical Education. These subjects are taught by certified teachers
who promote the integration of special area subject in the core curriculum
areas.
