B-P grades 3-8 test scores remain above local averages

On August 22, the New York State Education Department (SED) released district and school results for the English language arts (ELA) and mathematics assessments taken in spring 2017 by students in grades 3-8. Compared with state and county averages, Broadalbin-Perth students had similar or higher proficiency rates at most grade levels: 44 percent of students in grades 3-8 scored at levels considered proficient — levels 3 or 4 — on the mathematics exams and 37 percent earned proficient scores on the English language arts exams.

As in the past, students’ scores on the tests are converted into a scoring range of 1 through 4 meant to indicate their degree of proficiency in the Common Core standards for the grade level. Scores at levels 3-4 indicate proficiency (4 means that a student excels in the standards), while levels 1-2 indicate a student is below proficiency.

Broadalbin-Perth saw an overall year-to-year improvement in math results, while overall ELA proficiency rates stayed the same. The district’s scores were well above average proficiency rates in Fulton County.

State assessments in grades 3-8 do not factor into individual students’ grades. Rather, they are useful in helping schools measure the effectiveness of their curriculum, identify professional development needs, and determine which students could benefit from additional academic supports. Parents will receive information about their children’s individual assessment scores in September.
