Academics
The New York State Education Department requires children at the middle level to complete coursework in ten subject areas; Math, English, Social Studies, Science, Art, Music, Technology, Physical Education, Computer Technology, Health, Foreign Language, and Home & Career Skills.

We attend carefully to the developmental characteristics of these youngsters. We then plan program and instruction accordingly;

  • We know that students this age need to feel a sense of competence and mastery. To this end, we structure assignments so that all of our students' differing talents and abilities can be demonstrated- and more importantly, acknowledged. We strive to offer individualized and enriched classroom instruction to the greatest extent possible to all of our students.
  • We know and accept that our students are diverse, so we try to accommodate this diversity by varying our teaching styles, methods, and materials.
  • This age child has a strong need for self-exploration and self- definition, so we structure assignments that incorporate self-inquiry.
  • Middle-level children need to try out meaningful roles that parallel adult roles- so we offer students opportunities to act as reading tutors, as SPCA volunteers, and club officers. This year our students were the 'guest teachers' for our annual "Discovery Day" and they performed brilliantly in such capacity.
  • Children need structure and clear limits, so we post our school rules in the student 'agenda book' and discuss class rules until they are routine.

Middle School Program Design & Delivery

At the middle-level we support students, so that students can meet the standards!

We try to identify our students' academic strengths and areas where extra support is needed. To help accomplish this, three instructional teams have been formed, comprised of an English, Math, Social Studies, and Science teacher. "Team Adventure", our fourth team, is comprised of faculty who teach our 'exploratory' subjects.

Our instructional teams meet daily to plan shared and interdisciplinary curricular offerings, coordinate assignments, and discuss student needs and concerns. This is also an ideal time for scheduling parent/teacher conferences.
