B-P Science Wins
Three seniors in the Science Research Course at Broadalbin-Perth High School participated in the Greater Capital Region Science and Engineering Fair and Science Congress at RPI on Saturday, March 15, 2008. It is quite an honor to be chosen to compete in this Intel science fair. Alexandria Kuhl, Benjamin Schilling and Adam Wolfe were selected to present their research. Alex’s research is titled “A Biological Assessment of Hans Creek and the Effect of Acid Sensitive Parameters on Such Assessments”; Ben’s research is “The Measurement of Reverberation Time in Non-Diffuse Acoustical Environments”; and Adam’s is “The Effect of Prayer and the Law of Attraction on the Probability of Random Events.” These three students exhibit a very diverse range of scientific interests as seen in their research.
Benjamin Schilling was awarded the Walter Eppenstein Physics/Astronomy Award, which is awarded for an outstanding project in the field of physics or astronomy. Ben was guided in his research by his mentor Professor Paul Calamia, an architecture professor at RPI. Congratulations Ben!
Alexandria Kuhl’s research on her assessment of Hans Creek led her to win the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) award “Taking the Pulse of the Planet”. This award goes to research that exemplifies NOAA’s mission to understand and predict changes in Earth’s environment. Alex was also presented with the Stockholm Junior Water Prize given for a project in the water resources. This award opens the possibility to compete further and even to represent the United States in an international competition in Stockholm, Sweden.
Alex also won the Bronze Medal for the Intel science fair at RPI. She has the opportunity to go to Atlanta, Georgia for the International Science and Engineering Fair. Alex has been mentored in her research by Robert Bode, recently retired, with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Congratulations Alex.
Mrs. Maura Hibbitts, instructor of the Science Research course, is very proud of these three exceptional students!
