A pirate’s life is STEAM!

Swashbuckling pirates filled the halls of The Learning Community for Broadalbin-Perth’s inaugural STEAM Night, Thursday, March 14. During the pirate-themed event, students in pre-K through grade 5 completed challenges to earn gold coins that they used to help Captain Long Bones pay the ransom for his shipmate Captain Blackbeard (played by principals Brad Strait and Dan Casey, respectively).

The youngest pirates, students in pre-K and kindergarten, were challenged to dig for buried treasure, count their coins, then build a bridge to get to the island. Students in grades 1-2 built boats, identified coins, and figured out how many coins they could fit in their boats without the boats sinking. And students in grades 3-5 built catapults and tested them to see how close they could get to the target.

Students and parents also had the opportunity learn about other B-P programs, including the BPHS robotics team Nut Jobs, Future Cities, FIRST Lego League, as well as STEAM learning tools students use at all grade levels, including circuits, Ozobots, KEVA planks, and augmented and virtual reality.
