Athletic Placement Process

Regulations for students in grades 7 and 8 to participate on an interscholastic athletic team

The Athletic Placement Process is a process for screening students to determine their readiness to compete in high school level interscholastic athletic competition by evaluating their physical maturity, fitness and skill. The student may be placed at the appropriate level of competition which should result in increased opportunity, a fairer competitive environment, reduced injury and greater personal satisfaction. The intent of this program is to provide for students in grades 7 through 12 to safely participate at an appropriate level of competition based upon readiness rather than age and grade. Students trying out for modified teams DO NOT need to go through this process.

Prior to tryouts, students will have to complete the following:

The athlete should attend the pre-season meeting for their sport (will be announced in school) to receive the information regarding try-outs. Specific information regarding the first day of tryouts will be on each season’s web page as it becomes available. Students must be recommended by the team’s coach in order to proceed through the Athletic Placement Process.

Step 1: Parental Permission

Email Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Nursing Tucker Gifford at giffordt@bpcsd.org to obtain the permission form.

Step 2: Administrator Approval

The athletics administrator should confirm that the student is suitable for consideration. This includes the likelihood of 50% playing time, academic performance at or above grade level and emotional readiness.

Step 3: Medical Approval

Turn in a current physical or verify current physical is on file with the nurse’s office. Students will only be able to continue in the process if he/she meets the maturation requirement. Verification of maturation is determined by our school medical director or primary care physician.

Step 4: Fitness Testing

Students will complete physical fitness testing. Coaches will submit a list of athletes to be tested. The ONLY athletes tested will be those who have completed the necessary paperwork and met each of the previous requirements (permission form, administrative approval, medical approval with required maturation documentation, and coach’s recommendation).

Failure to complete any steps will end the process.

If the student meets all the requirements, he/she will be eligible to TRY OUT for his/her particular sport. If a student does not meet one or more of the performance standards, he/she will not be able to try out.
