B-P student-athletes honored with School of Distinction Award

They are as excellent in the classroom as they are when playing and practicing sports: Broadalbin-Perth’s student-athletes have once again earned their school the honor of being named a School of Distinction by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA).

B-P was one of just six schools out of the dozens that make up NYSPHSAA’s Section 2 to earn the School of Distinction Award for 2019-20 and was one of just 56 statewide to be so honored. B-P’s varsity athletes also earned their school recognition as a NYSPHSAA School of Excellence.

All of B-P’s 16 varsity sports teams were named Scholar-Athlete teams during the 2019-20 school year. Districts earn School of Distinction awards if 100% of their varsity teams are named Scholar-Athlete teams, and earn School of Excellence awards if 75% of their varsity teams are named Scholar-Athlete teams. B-P earned both honors during the 2018-19 school year as well.

“We’re proud of our student-athletes and would like to recognize our 2019-20 teams for achieving the NYSPHSAA honors,” said Tucker Gifford, B-P director of health, physical education, athletics and nursing.

“We are excited once again to see the numbers of schools honored increase, and it is a true testament to the kind of student-athletes we have here in New York State,” said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA executive director. “We continue to be proud of this program, which highlights and celebrates schools that value the importance of academics, as well as athletics. The fact that so many student-athletes thrived in the face of a pandemic this past winter is truly remarkable.”

Schools can apply for School of Distinction status by having 100% of its varsity teams qualify for and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award during their respective sports seasons. To earn the School of Excellence Award, 75% of a school’s varsity teams must qualify and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award.

According to NYSPHSAA, for the 2019-20 school year, the School of Distinction and School of Excellence winners were based on fall 2019 and winter 2020 Scholar-Athlete submissions because the spring 2020 program was cancelled.

Congratulations to all of B-P’s student-athletes for their accomplishments this year!
