Valerie Hamel’s second grade class at The Learning Community will soon have a lot more books to read. On the first day of school, Hamel found out that she had won a $500 grant from Scholastic.
“This is like winning the lottery,” Hamel said. “More books means more opportunities for my students to find something they love to read.”
Scholastic has teamed up with author James Patterson to give away $1.75 million worth of books to classrooms all over the country. Only 3,500 teachers out of more than 82,000 entrants were selected to receive the prize.
“The reading-at-home component is huge for me,” Hamel said. “I ask my students to read every night, and now I know that there will always be something of interest available to them.”
