Broadalbin-Perth Middle School’s “Chop It Up” was among the 14 teams that participated at the sixth annual Jr. Iron Chef competition at SUNY Cobleskill March 30. Team members Jaiden Farrington, Owen Compani and Macy Sweet prepared a breakfast burrito with pico de gallo and potatoes and onions.

The team’s entry was judged by area chefs, restauranteurs, dietitians, food writers and educators in the areas of oral presentations, exhibit displays, food content and plating. B-P’s team is coached by Hilary Compani and Angela Reisinger.

Jr. Iron Chef is a competition for middle and/or high school students to develop and execute healthy recipes using a combination of local and USDA (commodity) foods that could be prepared in a school cafeteria. The annual event is sponsored by SUNY Cobleskill, the Bassett Research Institute 5-2-1-0 Initiative, and the Rural Health Education Network of Schoharie, Otsego and Montgomery counties (RHENSOM).
