Amazing Math Race challenges students to think fast and move faster

The gym at Broadalbin-Perth Elementary School was filled with energy and excitement today as students took part in the Amazing Math Race: Survivor Challenge, a fast-paced competition that combined problem-solving, teamwork, and a race against the clock.

For the first time in the decade-plus history of the race, all students in grades 3-6 participated during the school day. In past years, the event was an optional evening activity for interested students.

Working in teams of two to four, students were tasked with solving five math problems similar to those the students will find on next week’s New York state math assessment. Each question came with a time limit, pushing teams to think quickly and collaborate effectively. Once a problem was completed, students brought their answers to a designated table in the gym, where a teacher checked their work and provided the next step.

With each verified answer, teams received a classroom location. One member from each group then raced out of the gym to find the assigned room, where they collected a coin and had their progress card checked by an adult. Even if a team ran out of time on a question, they continued the race, ensuring every group stayed engaged and moving throughout the event.

The challenge continued until all five questions were completed, and each team collected coins from five different classrooms. With their set complete, students returned to the gym for the final stage.

After finishing their math problems, teams were given an envelope filled with puzzle pieces and worked together to assemble the final solution. The first group to correctly complete the puzzle and have it checked by an adult was crowned their grade’s winner of the Amazing Math Race: Survivor Challenge. Winners received t-shirts and certificates, and each participating student received an event sticker.
