Archery Club hits the mark for BPES students

Students at Broadalbin-Perth Elementary School are putting down their hand-held devices and picking up compound bows this winter, thanks to the school’s Archery Club.

The program, designed for students in grades 4-6, recently saw a group of fifth graders visit the Archery Den in Amsterdam to put their training into practice. This year, the club kicked off in January with a group of sixth-grade students and will conclude this month with the fourth-grade group.

The club aims to provide a positive recreational experience while teaching students the fundamentals of the sport. Participants learn to fire compound bows in accordance with National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) guidelines under the instruction of PE teacher Vincent Calderone, who is NASP certified.

Beyond technical skill, the curriculum emphasizes archery etiquette and safety protocols. By providing a structured environment for students to master a new discipline, the club fosters focus and confidence that carries back into the classroom.
