B-P seniors initiate new tradition: Painted parking spaces

Recently, Broadalbin-Perth seniors were invited to paint their parking spaces in the student parking lot at B-P Jr./Sr. High School. In what they hope will become a new tradition, members of the Class of 2025 gathered at the school on a Sunday afternoon for a painting party that featured a catered lunch and prize giveaways.

The event took shape after seniors Josie Arcuri and Jillian Sanford approached high school principal Mark Brooks with the idea. Brooks told them he had been considering the initiative for some time and had looked into other schools that allow their students to paint their parking spots.

"It's something that has always been talked about but never followed through with," Sanford said. "Josie researched and found the paint that would work perfectly for this idea. I supported her idea and helped make it happen."

The paint Arcuri found is one that is durable and weather-resistant, but can also be easily removed at the end of the school year. The students even created a test strip to verify that the paint could be washed off effectively, pressure washing it a few weeks later to confirm it could be removed. Following these tests, they sent a form to their classmates to see who would be interested in participating.

“Since freshman year, I’ve wanted to make my high school experience memorable, especially my senior year," Arcuri said. "This year, I saw the trend of seniors painting their parking spots and thought that the students here would really enjoy painting and parking in their own customized spot. Overall, seeing an idea turn into a reality was super cool. It was a great opportunity and privilege, and I hope the senior classes in the future get to enjoy the same privilege that the Class of '25 did.”

Brooks hopes to make this an annual tradition so each year's seniors have another event to look forward to participating in.
