B-P Unified Bocce team secures back-to-back championships
This week, Broadalbin-Perth’s Unified Bocce team traveled to Albany to compete in this year's championship, and returned with their second trophy in as many years. The Patriots were welcomed back to campus by their peers, with an escort from the local volunteer fire department. As the students hopped off the bus, they were greeted with outstretched arms of support and congratulations from fellow students.
This is the second year that the Special Olympics has sponsored a Unified Bocce program. Broadalbin-Perth competes against other schools in Section 2 of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). At the championship, teams were placed in divisions based on their scores from throughout the season. B-P’s record placed the team in Division 1, along with teams from Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake and Albany.
Earlier in the week, all of Broadalbin-Perth’s Unified athletes were presented with varsity letterman jackets. The jackets symbolize the student-athletes' dedication and appreciation for the impact the program has had on the student body and community. Teammates cheered each other on as they were called individually to come up and receive their jackets.
“We feel so incredibly honored to be a part of Unified Sports,” said B-P Director of Athletics Tucker Gifford. “This program has had a tremendous impact on not only the student-athletes but also the school community as a whole.”
Broadalbin-Perth Unified Sports teams currently participate in bowling, bocce, and basketball.
