Biometrics and cybersecurity presenters speak to B-P students
Students in Jenna Orapello’s computer science class at Broadalbin-Perth Jr./Sr. High School had the opportunity to hear from two guest speakers before the holiday break. Owen McShane and Micheal Baumgardner provided students with an insider's perspective on biometrics and cybersecurity.
McShane was once the former lead investigator for the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles but has since retired. He now works for a biotech company, FaceTec, and is an adjunct professor at the University of Albany. McShane spoke to students about the importance of biometrics and how investigators use biometric information to solve crimes, find missing people, and fight identity fraud.
Baumgardner is currently the assistant dean for public engagement for the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity at the University at Albany. He spoke about how everything individuals do online can be tracked and cautioned students to think twice before posting photos, documents, or text on the internet. Baumgardner's visit was a continuation of a field trip the students took to the college in November.
