BPES third graders put physics skills to the test with Rube Goldberg challenge

Students in Amy Wurz’s third-grade science classes at Broadalbin-Perth Elementary School put their physics knowledge to the test last week through a hands-on project that emphasized teamwork and real-world application. As part of the activity, all third-grade students were challenged to design and build their own Rube Goldberg machines.

A Rube Goldberg machine is a complex contraption designed to complete a simple task through a series of interconnected — and often intentionally overcomplicated — steps. The challenge allowed students to creatively and practically apply their understanding of force, motion, and basic engineering concepts.

The Rube Goldberg machine project served as the culminating activity for the students’ unit on “invisible forces.” The unit, aligned with the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS), focused on balanced and unbalanced forces, using motion data to predict future movement, and exploring cause-and-effect relationships involving static electricity and magnetism.
