BPHS students practice real-world interview skills as part of ‘Game of Life’ career simulation

Students in Broadalbin-Perth High School’s “ELA for the Real World” class are putting their communication and career-readiness skills into action through a unique, hands-on learning experience that blends mock interviews with a semester-long life simulation.

As part of the course’s ongoing “Game of Life” project, students have been managing simulated adult responsibilities after being assigned a family size, career, and starting salary at the beginning of the term. Throughout the unit, students have worked with guest speakers and completed activities such as selecting housing, purchasing vehicles, budgeting for groceries, planning for emergencies, researching insurance needs, and responding to unexpected “life events” that can impact their finances.

On April 24, students took the next step in the simulation by participating in mock interviews with local professionals, practicing resume writing, cover letter development, and interview techniques. Each visiting professional selected one student they would hypothetically “hire,” and those students will receive a salary boost within the classroom simulation.

Guest interviewers included representatives from CFI Construction, St. Mary’s Healthcare, and W.B. Mason, who introduced themselves and shared insights about their fields before meeting with students individually.

Earlier in the unit, students connected with other local professionals, including a Realtor, insurance agent, financial advisor, and Airbnb host to better understand the financial decisions adults make every day. In addition, students are reading “Make Your Bed” by Admiral William McRaven and analyzing strategies for overcoming adversity and building habits for success.
