BPHS students take home awards from Olympics of the Visual Arts

Broadalbin-Perth High School’s senior high fashion team took first place in the state and the illustration and architecture teams both finished third at the New York State Olympics of the Visual Arts competition on Tuesday, April 1.

More than 20 students from B-P’s Patriot Academy and fine arts program showcased their talents at the 43rd annual competition, which was held in Saratoga Springs. Hosted by the New York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA), the event brought together school districts from across New York to compete in eight categories: painting, illustration, sculpture, fashion, design, drawing, photography, and architecture.

For the past two months, the participating B-P students dedicated themselves to solving a long-term artistic challenge, documenting their creative and design processes in detailed portfolios. Their work was displayed alongside entries from more than 700 students from elementary to high school, representing districts from as far away as Brentwood, N.Y. In addition to presenting their completed projects, each team faced an “on demand” artistic challenge, which tested their creativity under pressure.

Patriot Academy students competed in the senior high fashion, drawing, architecture, and illustration categories, while art teacher Jen Locke led teams in junior and senior high painting and junior high fashion.
