Broadalbin-Perth recognized as Unified Champion National Banner School

Broadalbin-Perth High School has been named a Unified Champion National Banner School by Special Olympics North America, earning the highest honor for commitment to inclusion.

The recognition follows years of work to create a school community where all students feel welcome, valued, and supported.

“When I heard the news that we were selected, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride and joy,” said Allyson Chorba, Broadalbin-Perth Unified coach and physical education teacher. “This award validates the efforts of our students, especially those in Unified programs, who have worked hard to build an inclusive culture.”

Unified Sports, which pairs students with and without intellectual disabilities on the same teams, has become a cornerstone of B-P’s school culture. The program emphasizes meaningful participation, equal opportunities, and building lasting relationships.
“As a coach, I believe the most important aspect of Unified Sports is fostering true inclusion,” Chorba said. “It’s not just about playing a game together — it’s about breaking down barriers, teaching empathy, and creating leadership opportunities for every student.”

At Broadalbin-Perth, the impact of Unified Sports has extended beyond the playing field. Students with and without disabilities are learning from one another, leading together, and creating friendships that carry into classrooms, hallways, and the greater school community.

“Unified has shifted the school culture to one that actively celebrates inclusion, kindness, and respect,” Chorba said. “It has helped us build a school where every student feels seen, valued, and supported.”
