Former NBA player Chris Herren inspires students from across the region at BPHS

Earlier this week, Broadalbin-Perth Jr./Sr. High School hosted Chris Herren — former professional basketball player, author, and nationally recognized motivational speaker — as he shared his powerful story of struggle, resilience, and hope with students from across the region.

With raw honesty and deep emotion, Herren spoke to ninth graders from several Foothills Council schools about his battle with addiction, the hidden pain behind his success, and the journey he took toward recovery and purpose. His story shed light on the importance of mental health and self-worth, as well as the strength it takes to speak up and seek help.

Throughout his talk, Herren emphasized the need to shift the conversation from focusing solely on the worst days of addiction to asking the important question: Why? Why do so many young people turn to substances? Why are people afraid to be vulnerable? Why is it so hard to ask for help?

“We have had the privilege of welcoming Chris to B-P on multiple occasions over the years. His message is always very well received by our students and staff," said Mark Brooks, principal at Broadalbin-Perth Jr./Sr. High School. "He continues to provide support and outreach to those touched by his message. I am extremely grateful for B-P to have this connection with Chris.”
