Life Skills students continue learning and fun through Camp Summer Haven

Throughout the summer, students in the Life Skills class at Broadalbin-Perth Jr./Sr. High School had the opportunity to participate in Camp Summer Haven. Through the program, students went hiking, swimming, mini-golfing, and to nearby Adirondack Animal Land. Students also cooked and baked new goodies each day according to a weekly theme.

"I'm not sure who enjoys their time at camp the most — the kids or us!" said Angela Reisinger, a teaching assistant who helps run the program. "I am so blessed to be able to work with these children. They truly have a huge place in my heart."

Camp Summer Haven began the second week in July and concluded Friday, Aug. 16. This is the second year of the camp at BPHS, and camp staff hope the program continues in future years.

"One of the things I love most about this camp is hearing the students talking about camp during the school year," said teaching assistant Cherise Bellandi. "They are always asking what we are planning and telling us they are excited."

Camp staff threw a surprise party for participating students to celebrate the last day of the program, complete with a scavenger hunt, pinata, and homemade mac and cheese with Dr. Seuss-themed cupcakes for dessert.

"Summer camp has been such a fun time with the students," said Kari Hughes-Hall, an aide who works with the program. "They are so excited to come in each day to see what new activity is planned. This has been such a rewarding experience and I'm so thankful to be a part of it."
