Middle school students master culinary skills in “Chopped” Challenge

Students in Anna Kittredge’s home and careers classes at Broadalbin-Perth Middle School recently put their teamwork, creativity, and cooking skills to the test in a chicken tortilla soup “Chopped” Challenge.

Before the competition, students built a strong foundation in essential kitchen skills. They learned knife techniques from guest chef Dave Stokna, practiced roasting and sautéing ingredients, and explored culinary creativity.

During the challenge, students followed a step-by-step “Chopped”-style process:

  • reviewing mystery ingredients and recipe expectations;
  • prepping ingredients with proper knife safety;
  • collaborating in teams to plan their recipes;
  • cooking their soups under timed conditions using roasting and sautéing techniques; and
  • plating and presenting their final dishes for judging.

The activity highlighted student teamwork, problem-solving, and culinary creativity, all while giving them a taste of real-world kitchen skills.
