Patriot Academy students take their skills to new heights with space debris project
Recently, students in the Patriot Academy at Broadalbin-Perth Jr./Sr. High School have been working on a NASA-inspired project about space debris.
Students were tasked with researching the topic and identifying why space debris is a problem. They then worked in teams to design a device that could either repurpose space debris or remove it entirely without creating more debris. The students used artificial intelligence art platforms to bring their designs to life before finishing their projects using a CAD program (Computer-animated design). The teams with the best designs, as voted on by their classmates, will have their designs 3D printed.
As part of the project, students heard from guest speaker Roya Lewis, who is currently studying for her PhD in aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech. Lewis told students about the projects in rocket propulsion she is working on both for her academic program and in her job at Boeing. Lewis challenged the students to think critically about the topics related to their project and gave them ideas for future projects.
