Sanford, Winney appointed to leadership roles at Broadalbin-Perth

The Broadalbin-Perth Central School District began 2026 with two new members of its district leadership team: Jennifer Sanford as assistant principal at Broadalbin-Perth High School and Erika Winney as the district’s new Director for Food Service, Wellness and Nutrition.

A B-P graduate and former teacher, Sanford returns to Broadalbin-Perth High School after more than two decades of experience in education, including extensive leadership at the district and building levels. Most recently, she has served as director of education, principal, and CSE chairperson at St. Anne Institute in Albany, where she oversaw academic programming, special education services, school improvement planning, and trauma-informed initiatives in a residential school setting.

“I am honored and excited to return to Broadalbin-Perth High School as assistant principal,” Sanford said. “As a proud B-P alumna and the parent of children who graduated from B-P, this community holds a special place in my heart. I look forward to giving back to the school that helped shape my own experiences and to supporting the next generation of B-P students.”

Prior to her stint at St. Anne, Sanford served as director of student services at Mayfield Central School District for six years, supervising staff, leading special education and Section 504 programming, and supporting student mental health initiatives. Earlier in her career, she served as the director of special education at Hadley-Luzerne Central School District and spent 17 years as a special education teacher at Broadalbin-Perth, beginning her career in the district in 2000. She received Broadalbin-Perth’s Outstanding Patriot Award in 2016.

“Parents and community members can expect me to be visible, approachable, and committed to open communication,” Sanford said. “I believe strongly in collaboration, consistency, and fairness, and I am dedicated to supporting both academic achievement and student well-being.”

Sanford holds school building and district leadership certifications and earned her degrees from SUNY Albany, the College of Saint Rose, and Fulton-Montgomery Community College.

Winney brings extensive experience in nutrition services, healthcare leadership, and school food service management to her new role as Director for Food Service, Wellness and Nutrition. She most recently served as clinical nutrition manager at Saratoga Hospital within the Albany Med Health System, where she managed a team of registered dietitians, oversaw quality assurance and regulatory compliance, and served as a liaison between medical and nursing staff.

“As a dietitian, I envision school meals as a powerful foundation for lifelong health — where fresh, innovative food choices nourish students today and shape healthier futures for families and communities,” Winney said.

Winney previously served as school lunch director for the Greater Johnstown School District through the Capital Region BOCES Shared Food Services program, and has held leadership roles in hospital systems across New York and the country. Her background includes oversight of large-scale food service operations, staff training, menu development, food safety compliance, and nutrition education.

Winney is a registered dietitian and certified dietitian nutritionist in New York state and holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in dietetics from D’Youville College.

Superintendent of Schools Stephen Tomlinson said the appointments of Sanford and Winney to their positions reflect the district’s commitment to strong leadership and continuity.

“Jennifer and Erika both bring to B-P extensive experience, proven leadership, and a clear focus on supporting students and families,” Tomlinson said. “We are confident they will strengthen our district and continue the important work of building positive school cultures and supporting student well-being.”

Sanford replaces Shauna-Rae Haley, who was recently appointed athletics director at B-P, while Winney succeeds Jim Garner, who retired as food services supervisor at the end of December. Both began in their new roles on Monday, Jan. 5.
