Second graders show off science fair projects to peers, parents
How much salt must you add to water to float an egg? Can plants grow without soil? Whose mouth is cleaner: a human's or a dog's? Answers to these questions and many more were on display at Broadalbin-Perth Elementary School on June 7 as students presented their second-grade science fair projects.
For the past six weeks, students have been working at home to perform scientific experiments. Each student started with a question, formed a hypothesis, then designed and carried out their experiments.
All scientific disciplines, from biology to chemistry to physics, were on display in the elementary school's small gymnasium. Students proudly showed off their display boards, gave demonstrations, and answered questions posed by teachers, older and younger students, and visiting parents.
Those in attendance learned that the amount of salt required to float an egg depends on the volume of water being used, as well as whether the egg is raw or hard-boiled; plants can grow without soil; and a human's mouth is cleaner than a dog's.
