Students plan and host January events as part of home and careers class project

Students in Anna Kittredge’s home and careers classes at Broadalbin-Perth Middle School planned and hosted a series of events throughout January, focusing on teamwork, leadership, and service to the school community.

Activities included a custodian appreciation pancake-and-waffle breakfast, hot cocoa for students during lunch blocks, and trivia and study sessions. Students worked under Kittredge’s guidance to plan, budget, and organize each activity.
Through the projects, students gained a better understanding of the Broadalbin-Perth community by identifying groups that could be recognized for their service or inspired through simple gestures such as refreshments or a fun activity. Students also contributed to a team effort by specializing in specific roles and recognizing how their work impacted the overall success of each event.

“It’s important for students to move above simply identifying and summarizing knowledge, which are the two basic levels of learning,” Kittredge said. “Students need to have an opportunity to not only apply the ELA, science, math, and social science information that they are learning, but also to apply it to something meaningful that benefits their community.”

The assignment emphasized collaboration, responsibility, and service while giving students the opportunity to create positive experiences for others within the school community.
